During the State Fair of Texas, Sept. 30-Oct. 23, State Fair admission and parking fees are required before entry into Texas Discovery Gardens. We will be closed on Oct. 24 to recover from one too many rides on the Tilt-a-Whirl.
Texas Discovery Gardens is a 7.5 acre organic botanic garden featuring native and adapted plants. Inside, our two-story Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium transports you to a tropical rainforest, complete with hundreds of free-flying butterflies.
At family events offered throughout the year, children and parents can share the experience of being amazed and inspired by nature's intricate web of life. Gardening workshops and guided tours provide expert advice on using native and adapted plants to create backyard habitats for butterflies, birds and other native wildlife.
Daily Butterfly Release TalkJoin us Daily at Noon for a talk and butterfly release as we let newly-emerged butterflies out into the Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House & Insectarium. The amount of butterflies to release varies daily, based on how quickly they emerge after we receive the pupae. Pupae (chrysalises) are shipped in weekly from local farms in the U.S., Africa, El Salvador, Colombia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. Admission to the butterfly house is sold from 10 am to 4:45 pm. (We close at 5 pm). The butterfly house contains tropical butterflies, beneficial insects, and aquatic life. Additional arthropod displays are in our lobby.
To be the destination where children and adults discover and learn to sustain the natural world.
